Her father Michel Horowitz, and mother Cynthia Palmer are authors and editors. Ryder is Jewish. Ryder believes that her father came from an ethnically Jewish origin. Ryder has two half-siblings younger than her, Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder's family relocated from Mendocino County in California at the age of seven older. There was no electricity.
